About Carl Payne
Carl Payne, born in Staffordshire, is a sculptor whose artistic journey has been deeply intertwined with his academic pursuits, spanning from the Burslem School of Art to the Henry Doulton School of Sculpture and Stafford College. Specializing in Figurative Sculpture, Carl embarked on his career with a succession of commissions, establishing a reputation for exquisite craftsmanship in both life-size pieces and smaller gallery works.
Artist statement
Carl's sculptures epitomize figurative art at its pinnacle, each piece serving as a portal to a dimension beyond the physical realm. With a demand for his work that allows him unfettered creative expression, Carl's artistic inspiration draws from a myriad of sources, including mythology, history, religion, and music, all revolving around the sacred feminine. His fascination with this subject, sparked years ago, continues to drive his artistic exploration.
Working directly from models, Carl seeks to capture the essence of the human form while infusing his interpretations with a unique narrative. Constantly evolving until the casting in bronze, his sculptures convey a powerful sense of meaning, with Carl deeply involved in every step of the casting process, from sculpting in wax to the final patination. Through cast bronze, he achieves striking contrasts between smooth and textured surfaces, patinated areas, and polished bronze, enhancing the depth and impact of his creations.
Investment
Carl's highly acclaimed bronze sculptures have garnered collectors from across the globe. Though he passed away in late 2021, Carl's sculptural legacy endures, a testament to his enduring impact on the art world.
